Benefit from this document:
Jorge Scientific Corporation (JSC) is a contractor for the Global Positioning System (GPS) User Equipment (UE) Program providing engineering support to the GPS UE Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) Integrated Product Team (IPT). In FY09, JSC and the GPS UE DMSMS IPT utilized over 500 GIDEP DMSMS Alerts, Problem Advisories, and Manufacturer Product Change Notices, to mitigate obsolescence in 1980s technology legacy systems installed in Joint Service platforms to meet Program Managers Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) requirements to 2017. All of the GPS UE FY09 solutions implemented were one of the Supply Solutions, which is the most cost-effective to mitigate obsolescence preventing redesign of unique Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs) installed in fielded receivers. The legacy suite of GPS UE was designed in the 1980s as a supplementary aid to navigation. Because of the revolutionary jump in navigation and timing performance provided by GPS, the system is called upon by the Joint Service Combat Commanders to do much more. The GIDEP alerts enabled JSC and the GPS UE DMSMS IPT to mitigate obsolescence in GPS UE and avoid the occurrence of Mission Incapable (MICAPs), Casualty Reports (CASREPs), and Awaiting Parts (AWP) at the Depots to extend the service life of fielded equipment without redesign. Mitigating obsolescence in GPS UE ensured uninterrupted mission effective support to the warfighters at a reasonable cost. By mitigating obsolescence and avoiding redesign, the GPS UE Program Managers did not have to budget for Nonrecurring Engineering (NRE), procurement of modification kits, and Depot labor to modify receivers thereby realizing prevented expenditures for the program.
