GIDEP Document Number: M9-D-08-0004A
Document Title: VISHAY SILICONIX MILITARY-GRADE PRODUCT DISCONTINUANCE PCN-SIL-042008
Document Type: DIMINISHING MANUFACTURING SOURCES

Benefit from this document:
Jorge Scientific Corporation (JSC) is a contractor for the Global Positioning System (GPS) User Equipment (UE) Program providing engineering support to the GPS UE Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) Integrated Product Team (IPT). GIDEP Alerts M9-D-08-0004 and -0004A dated April 2008 notified JSC that Vishay Siliconix Division, sole source of supply for JANTX2N6661, had announced the immediate discontinuance of their military grade products with a final order date of 1 June 2008. This transistor is used in a frequency application, which requires fast turn on and turn off times. There is no equivalent transistor in this package style. A modification to the Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs) would be required to use another part. Discussion of the GIDEP Alert with the GPS UE Program Managers and the DSCC DMSMS resulted in DSCC requesting Vishay Siliconix Division reconsider their decision to obsolete this transistor in view of the sole source of supply, high demand rate, and no other equivalent part in the package style for replacement in DoD-wide legacy systems. The DSCC DMSMS representative successfully negotiated with Vishay Siliconix Division to continue production of this unique transistor for use in sustaining GPS UE and other DoD-legacy systems. The GIDEP Alert prevented redesign at the component level and redesign of GPS UE CCAs.

Total Expenditure Prevention: $4,283,786
