GIDEP membership proved to be extremely valuable to ORNL Metrology this year in our (successful) efforts to achieve NVLAP Accreditation. The time normally spent composing procedures was instead devoted to working on accreditation. Because we?re part of a Research and Development facility with a vastly eclectic inventory of instrumentation systems, we?re very frequently required to calibrate unusual instruments on very short notice. A classic example of this occurred in September of this year. The managers of the HFIR (High Flux Isotope Reactor) had to have a 14-yeqr old, Ellisco Standard Volume certified immediately. We had no procedure for standard volume certifications. Fortunately, there was a U.S. Army-vetted procedure for certifying this exact make and model device in the GIDEP library. Had this not been the case, the reactor?s restart could have been delayed, costing many thousands of dollars. That procedure now resides, along with many others from GIDEP, in ORNL Metrology?s official archive. GIDEP saved us at least $5000 this year.
