GIDEP Agency Action Notice (AAN) AAN-U-04-129 identified suspect parts supplied by 34 companies in the Jacksonville, FL area to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The National Stock Numbers (NSNs) identified by DLA as suspect parts are populated in over 185,519 places in 9,413 GPS Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), with some of the parts complex devices, i.e., Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and Microcontrollers. The timely GIDEP alert and the prompt DLA investigation and subsequent removal of suspect parts from the supply system enabled GPS to insure that none of the suspect parts were installed in the equipment and prevented users from experiencing high receiver failure rates. The estimated cost avoidance is very conservative and is based on historical failure rates (production, warranty period, and receivers returned from the field) for parts built to the OEMs specifications. This calculation does not include the additional costs that users would have incurred in maintenance turn around time to remove and replace failed GPS receivers had the suspect parts been used. Without the GIDEP Alert and DLA's prompt investigative action of the individuals distributing the suspect material, the failure rates for GPS UE could have doubled.
