Strictly from a preventative standpoint, this GIDEP has been most valuable. We have not used the battery-powered equipment mentioned in this alert, but we did not have anything in our procedures to prevent their use. After reading the GIDEP alert our procedures department included clauses in the new procedures preventing the use of battery-powered magnetic particle inspection equipment. Our company (Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. is spread out over many sites. If we had started using these machines it may have been a while and after a number of failures before we may have realized the errors the machine was giving us. Items that are being mag particle inspected are done so for a reason. In the aerospace industry a failure in not detecting a bad piece of material can be catastrophic. I am being very conservative when I estimate that it may have taken at least 3 occurrences before the problem in using the battery-powered equipment would be detected. Actions that may occur from having bad material inspected as good may be anything from reinspection of parts to grounding whole fleets of aircraft while defective parts are recovered and replaced. Basing each occurrence on a conservative amount of $25,000 I will estimate our savings by this GIDEP at $75,000. Under the worst scenarios the cost savings could run up into the millions of dollars. This problem could have occurred on any of the many military aircraft that we now build parts or assemblies for. Currently those aircraft include: C-17, FA-18, F-22, E-2C, Global Hawk, V-22, C-130, C-5 and B-2.
