Goverment Initiatives to Solve DMSMS

OBSOLESCENCE PREDICTION TOOL (OPT)

OPT was developed for the Naval Supply Systems Command during FY99 as an initiative under the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program. Previously accessible to authorized users and located on the GIDEP Web site, OPT access has been suspended while the tool undergoes a significant upgrade. Initial upgrade efforts include the creation of an NLP-unique Technology Trends Database (TTDB) which will ultimately enable users to screen weapons systems/equipment and identify components which are likely to be susceptible to obsolescence. The TTDB will:

  1. Optimize data for military applications
  2. Provide total DoD (Navy) control for data management
  3. Allow for direct manufacturer data input

Design of the TTBD is in progress. Other upgrades will include an improved microprocessor obsolescence prediction capability employing neural net (expert system) logic, and a modified user interface capability ensuring the most responsive operational readiness results from a Fleet support perspective.

In short, OPT is being upgraded to enhance its effectiveness for mitigating the effects of rapid material obsolescence. In order to meet this objective, OPT must be developed to:

  1. Meet the needs of a widely ranging base of military engineers and logisticians
  2. Be used as an e-Commerce resource for interactive bill-of-materials processing
  3. Respond to inquiries ranging from individual component status to the health of major subsystems
